Chocolate is adored by many, but few know that this delicious food originally comes from Mexico. Not Switzerland, or Hershey, Pennsylvania! When visiting Puerto Vallarta, you’ve got to know the 3 best places to buy chocolate. Artisan chocolates make a great gift to take to a dinner party, or just a delightful snack for your Party of One.
1. VALLARTA CIGAR FACTORY – Libertad 100, Centro
This downtown Vallarta landmark may be known for its cigars and coffee, but just next door to the cafe, is a fantastic little gourmet chocolate shop. Reminiscent of the Sees’ Candy chocolate counter, you will be amazed at the variety of individual chocolates to choose from. They also have a wide collection of natural energy bars made from cacao and other interesting Mexican staples like amaranth. Grab a coffee and a few of your favorite confections (I love the chocolate peanut butter cups) and sit out on their outdoor patio watching shoppers at the famous Rio Cuale Flea Market strollilng by across the street.
2. THE CHOCO MUSEO- Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez 128
A full blown experience, the Choco Museo is a fantastic place to visit while in Puerto Vallarta. Not only do they have a shop full of freshly made, organic, nationally grown chocolate, they have an educational museum and classes as well! This is a great activity for large groups. Great teachers and guides, and if you take a class with them, expect to take home a bag of your very own hand-made Mexican chocolate!
XOCODIVA- Aquiles Serdan 368, Zona Romantica
This is where all you Instagram Influencers want to eat your chocolate! These gorgeous confections are true eye candy, and they taste delicious as well. These chocolatiers have been an Old Town/ Romantic Zone staple for years and have earned their place in the sun. Their factory can be found on Aquiles Serdan, with a small shop on busy Basilio Badillo street where you can pick up your favorite pieces before heading to a dinner party or birthday celebration. Anyone would love to receive one of these mini works of art!
