Mexican Christmas traditions

Posadas are an important part of Mexican Christmas traditions, from December 16th to 24th. The word “posada” means “inn”. In this tradition, the nine nights of posadas represent the nine days journey to Bethlehem, or alternatively, could represents the nine months that of baby Jesus gestation in his mother Mary.

Asking for a Home

In the Mexican Christmas traditions, the nine nights of posadas relate to the Mary and Joseph journey before finding an Inn in Bethlehem, where Jesus could be born. Traditionally, Mary rides on a donkey, going from house to house asking if there is room at the Inn. The procession will go to particular homes, a different one each night for asking for shelter, singing a special song: La Canción Para Pedir Posada (The song for asking shelter -you should read the lyrics’ translation).  Usually, the last one accepts Mary and Joseph and the traditional celebration begins.

Traditional food for the Mexican Christmas

Mexican culture is already famous for the diversity of delicious food and flavors. If you have never had the chance to try the typical posada food you are missing a tasty meal with rich and delightful flavor! For example, it is the season of “Tamales” and fresh fruit “ponche“. You should try the “Pozole” too, which is a delicious meat and vegetable soup very traditional in Mexico. In fact, the “Pozole” is one of the more typical Mexican “feast foods”, eaten also during the Independence Day or 5 de Mayo parties (5th of May).

Mexican Christmas- Lot of events!

After the Procession for Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe from the 1st to the 12th of December, Mexican Christmas follows with the nine nights of Posadas from the 16th to the 24th. Next comes the “Noche Buena” known as the Christmas Eve. Traditionally, children of Mexico receive gifts on Noche Buena, when the clock strikes midnight. Finally, on January 6 another suite of gifts arrive for the children with “Los Reyes Magos” (The Three Wise Men). Indeed, this tradition reflects the arrival of the Three Wise Men bring presents to Christ. Its a great time to experience Christmas in a different culture, and of course enjoy a warm and sunny Christmas on the beach.
