Seafood in PV: a Beginner’s Guide

Puerto Vallarta is famous for its fresh food. No matter where you are visiting from, you can’t help but be impressed by the beautiful produce and delicious seafood. Since PV is a city by the sea, there is a wide array of “mariscos” to try. Here is a Top 5 list of the Must Try Seafood Dishes in PV. Enjoy!

1. Ceviche

Ceviche is a dish made from little pieces of raw fish, cooked with lime juice and tossed with onion, carrot, cilantro, and tomato. This fresh dish is served on top of a tostada and goes best with an extra squeeze of lime and your favorite salsa on top. Ceviche is delicious on a warm day when you’re looking for a light lunch. In fact, most seafood stands in Mexico are a daytime/lunchtime thing and close around 6 pm.

2. Fish Tacos

Who doesn’t love a fresh fish taco? Here in PV, you can order them “capeado”  (deep fried in batter) or “a la plancha” (grilled). Most seafood stands will have an array of toppings to jazz up your taco, like freshly chopped onion, lime wedges, cilantro, purple onion, and more.

3. Marlin

One of my all time favorites, I love a fresh marlin stew served on top of a tostada. This red fish is stewed with tomato, onion, and spices. It is served warm on top of tostadas and is a very filling and tasty seafood option. For those that are pescaterians, marlin is about as close to red meat as you can get!

4. Seafood Cocktail

Not to be confused with shrimp cocktail in the United States, a Mexican seafood cocktail is a seafood soup that is served either cold or warm. “Frio o tibio”. The cocktail includes shrimp, scallops, squid, and whatever else the house may throw in. There is fresh veg like avocado, onion, and tomato as well. The broth has a very light citrus taste. This is a truly refreshing, and healthy dish!

5. Aguachile

Aguachile is a spin on ceviche in a way. This dish is made with raw shrimp and onions, cooked by lots of lime and an array of green chilies. This is for those who love a little fire in their food, it is spicy!
